THANK YOU to Victoria Skafest for their Generous Donation!

A big thanks goes out to the Victoria Skafest organizers who made a generous donation to the Ancient Forest Alliance as part of their carbon offset program. The organizers also provided space for the AFA to table at the event which gathered hundreds of petition signatures and many new friends.

As North American’s largest and longest running ska festival with 4 Days of Ska, Reggae, Punk and Dub it’s not an event to miss!

2011 Tall Tree Music Festival - Port Renfrew

THANK YOU to the Tall Trees Society for their generous donation!

The Ancient Forest Alliance would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to everyone at Radio Contact Productions and the Tall Trees Society for organizing the 2nd annual Tall Tree Music Festival in Port Renfrew and donating a generous portion of the proceeds to the AFA. Your much appreciated support helps us continue our work to protect BC’s endangered old-growth forests and promote incredible areas such as the Avatar Grove.

A thanks goes out as well, to all the volunteers, the event sponsors, the amazing musicians and DJ’s, and those who came and had an awesome time!

When visiting Port Renfrew, be sure to stop by the new Tourist Information Centre on the right side of the road in town and pick up the new Tall Tree Tour map which has directions to the biggest and best trees nearby!

Also, always make sure to support the local businesses in town while you’re there! For a list of places to eat, sleep and more, visit the online directory here: https://www.portrenfrewcommunity.com/

See you all next year!

A large group of hikers crowd around the massive redcedar dubbed "Canada's Gnarliest Tree" during an Ancient Forest Alliance led public hike to the Avatar Grove in summer 2010.

Thank you to Mountain Equipment Co-op for supporting the Ancient Forest Alliance!

The Ancient Forest Alliance would like to sincerely thank the Mountain Equipment Co-op for helping fund our BC slideshow tour as well as many of our public hikes to the Avatar Grove which will continue to run into the fall. This contribution has allowed us to inform and involve thousands of British Columbians around the state of our province’s endangered old-growth forests and to also get them out and experience their magnificence first hand.

The AFA runs on a fraction of many larger NGO’s budgets and is very thankful for the generosity of MEC and our public supporters.

The next time you’re in need of any outdoor supplies be sure to drop by the local MEC located at 1450 Government Street in Victoria. You can also visit them online.

Avatar Grove – Making a Stand

The AFA sends a big THANK YOU to the four bright and dedicated students from Pearson College that put together an excellent 7 minute documentary on the Avatar Grove and Vancouver Island’s threatened old-growth forests. Liz Welliver, Amelia Redmond, Luke Hunter, and Danielle de Jonge toured the Grove with AFA’s Ken Wu and TJ Watt in late February and afterwards also interviewed several local business owners and political representatives during their stay. The result is a fun and informative video that does a great job in capturing the campaign detail nuances which shorter news clips typically lack. Pearson College, located in Metchosin on Vancouver Island BC, is an international school for gifted students in grade 10-12.

New INCREDIBLE High-Definition (HD) Video Shot in the Avatar Grove!

Click here for a direct link to the video

Professional videographer Darryl Augustine recently spent two days gathering high-definition video clips with AFA photographer TJ Watt in the Avatar Grove and Gordon River Valley near Port Renfrew.

Shooting with the Canon 5D MK II, the Canon 7D, and using a pocket dolly to roll smooth shots, Darryl has captured some of the most stunning, Planet Earth-like video of these incredible yet threatened forests. This clip is a rough edit of some of the footage gathered during the trip. (note – a clip of the San Juan Spruce is spliced in with the Avatar Grove footage)

Thanks to Darryl for volunteering his skills to help forward the campaign to protect BC’s endangered old-growth forests! The video footage will prove very useful in the future for a mini-documentary and TV news media handouts.
